An Aussie Favourite – The Anzac Biscuit

13.09.2012

Hi, I’m Tanya. I’ve been teaching English for six years. I started teaching in Korea and liked it so much I lived there for three years! I’ve been working at Langports Brisbane since I returned to Australia. I love travelling, photography, reading, and trying new food.

Today I’m going to introduce you to a food that may be new for you: the Anzac biscuit! In Australia Anzac Day is a public holiday on the 25th of April to remember soldiers who died in war.

During the first world war these biscuits were sent to Australian soldiers because they last a long time without refrigeration (they had to travel all the way from Australia to Turkey!). These days we usually make them for Anzac Day, but you can make them any day of the year by following this recipe:

Ingredients
1 cup of plain flour (150 grams)
1 cup of rolled oats (90 grams)
1 cup of dessicated coconut (85 grams)
3/4 cup of brown sugar
125 grams of butter
2 tablespoons of golden syrup
2 tablespoons of water
1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
(You can buy all these ingredients easily at the supermarket.)

Equipment
an oven
a saucepan
a bowl
a sieve
some measuring cups
a tablespoon
a teaspoon
a fork
a tray
some baking paper
(You can find most of these things in Big W or at the supermarket if you don’t have them.)

How to make it:

1. Preheat your oven to 160º Celsius.

2. Sift the flour into a bowl, then add the brown sugar, coconut and oats. Mix them together.

3. Put the butter, golden syrup, and water in a saucepan together. Melt the butter and stir them together. Finally add the bicarbonate of soda and stir it in.

4. Pour the butter mixture into the bowl with the flour mixture and stir them together.

5. Get a tray and put baking paper on top of it. Then get a tablespoon of the biscuit mixture and make a ball with it. Next, put it on the tray and flatten it a little with a fork. Make sure you leave a space between each one!

6. Finally, put them in the oven for 10 minutes, or until they are a golden brown colour. (Remember – the oven should be 160 degrees Celsius). After taking them out leave them to cool down for 10 minutes – they aren’t ready to eat straight out of the oven!

So, that’s it. Follow these simple instructions and you’ll be eating Anzac Biscuits in no time!
