An Update From Langports’ Gold Coast Campus

29.11.2012

I think it is time to catch up on what’s been happening on the Gold Coast.

The Langports’ Gold Coast campus currently has students from 19 different countries. Our school is buzzing with energy so there are heaps of opportunities to meet new people, make new friends and of course practice speaking English. Having a busy school, means new classes and new teachers, so a big welcome to Sabrina and Jasmine!

We are now in the last week of Cambridge — where on earth did those 12 weeks go?! Our students have their speaking exams this week followed by their written exams next week. We wish them all the best, but know they will do well because they have put in so much effort!  It is going to be sad to see them go. Without this big group, our school will feel rather empty until we go BOOM! And fill up again for the summer.

November started with Langports Games — enough said.

No — we are good sports down here on the Gold Coast, so even though we didn’t come away with the Cup this time, we all had such a great day. Players participated fairly and the supporters were animated and lively. It was a great day; very hot and very enjoyable. But look out Brisbane, next games, that cup is coming back down south!

Throughout November our new Business Plus course ran for the first time. This is a 10 week closed course for students who would like to improve their English for the workplace. As well as covering the necessary grammar and vocab,  the course covers  exam preparation for the TOEIC and Cambridge BEC exams, as well as developing students writing, speaking and presentation skills.

Every few months we hold an International Day where students prepare traditional dishes from their  countries. This is always a fantastic experience, with soooooo much tasty food to try. The day ends with everyone feeling full and satisfied  after sharing  different music, food and cultures. Students put in so much time and effort and made the afternoon a success.

Last Friday was our student Christmas party, which was held on the 77th floor of the Q1, the Gold Coasts’ highest building. This was also a fundraising event to raise money for Yalari, a charity helping educate indigenous Australian children.  Langports   has supported  this charity since our foundation was founded, and from this one event we were able to donate over $1000. The party was masquerade, so students and staff dressed up. Everyone looked fantastic in their masks and enjoyed drinks and nibbles while taking in the best possible view of the Gold Coast.

As well as all of these events we saw new students arrive and some of our long term students graduate. We had student excursions to Stradbroke Island, Max Brennar and Dreamworld. We held TOEIC  exams and  Cambridge FCE and CAE computer based exams. We’ve had great weather, great waves, great fun! Just another month on the beautiful Gold Coast.

To all our wonderful students and staff, thanks for making Langports GC such an enjoyable place!
