Hello, I am Mary, a teacher from the Langports Gold Coast campus. I have been teaching English as a second language since 2004.
There are many ways that you can improve your English and have fun at the same time!
No doubt you like music. Well, just find a song you enjoy listening to, watch the music video on Youtube and get the lyrics from the Internet, and you have your own English lesson!
LISTEN to the song, WATCH the video, and SING.
Your listening will improve, your vocabulary will increase because you will learn meaning in context; your speaking and pronunciation will become clearer.
It’s easy to remember songs that you like and when you remember songs, you remember grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. It’s also a great way to pick up natural English expressions.
For example, you can usually find songs which contain the grammar structures you are studying. Shania Twain sings a song “You’re Still The One” which has a chorus full of Relative Clauses. Here is the Chorus with the Relative Clauses in bold:
(You’re still the one.)
You’re still the one I run to;
The one that I belong to.
You’re still the one I want for life.
(You’re still the one.)
You’re still the one that I love;
The only one I dream of.
You’re still the one I kiss good night.
If you listen to the song a few times, you will easily remember these relative clauses and the structure.
There is a lot on the Internet to help you with your English studies. I have started a blog – www.marysenglishblog.com – to help students find information and revision exercises on the Internet. I have included links to popular music videos including one of Shania Twain singing ‘You’re Still The One”.
Check it out and enjoy English!
